- USC East College Prep
- Los Angeles, CA, USA
- Full Time
The Social Studies Blended Learning Teacher will have three primary functions: serving as a teacher of social studies, leading an advisory of 9th grade students and being a contributing team member to multiple teams.
USC East College Prep will prepare each of its graduates to use their college degrees and careers to make a Positive Multigenerational Change. Located in Lincoln Heights, this free, public charter high school aims to deliver the best personalized college prep experience in the country to students on Los Angeles' Eastside. Each student experiences a personalized learning experience through technology and great teaching, an opportunity to deepen their sense of purpose through year-long projects, and a positive school community - all to ensure that each student is ready to go to, and graduate from, the best colleges in the country. Fundamental to our model is building a safe and welcoming school culture with high expectations, while fostering student autonomy. We are looking for staff members that are responsive to feedback and data, reflect constantly on their work and student outcomes, and not take themselves too seriously; in turn, staff can expect to grow their instructional practice and leadership capacity in a high-energy, collaborative environment.
In the teaching function, the Social Studies teacher will be responsible for creating, adjusting and executing a rigorous college-prep curriculum that integrates technology and flexible use of space+time in order to deliver the right learning for students at the right moment. Teachers will also coach and mentor students through our Performance Task projects, where students design a project aligned with our yearly theme. In joining our teaching staff at USC East, one can expect to learn from and push their colleagues, all of whom have a strong history of student learning. Teachers will be responsible for enforcing, with 100% consistency, our school-wide student code of conduct to create a safe and rigorous learning environment. The teacher's primary accountability is towards student learning - making significant gains on the ACT with their students.
In the advisory function, the teacher will be responsible for supporting his/her advisory students to meeting our 6 yearly promotion requirements and creating a sense of community amongst this cohort for their four years of high school together. As an advisor, this means building strong relationships and teamwork with their advisory and meeting with students on an individual basis. Advisors at USC East help students set and reach academic goals, support the college-going process and develop socio-emotional skills. The advisor is also responsible for building meaningful relationships with parents/guardians, serving as the primary interface between family and school. The primary accountability of the advising role is in the students meeting their yearly promotion requirements.
In the team function, the teacher will be an active participant and accountable team member. Team members should anticipate learning from and sharing with their colleagues. They will engage in lively debates around planning, student learning outcomes and maintaining a school culture. Teams will be tasked with solving dilemmas as they appear at our school, and team members are the most critical problem-solvers. Team members should neither shy away from conflict nor accountability to results. The primary accountability of a team and its members is measured through our strategic plan goals.
